Fernandes and Casemiro Strike Before Red Card Drama Turns Tense Encounter at Old Trafford
A rollercoaster encounter at Old Trafford saw Manchester United secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Chelsea, a result that momentarily eases the mounting pressure on manager Ruben Amorim.
The match turned on its head after just five minutes when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was shown a straight red card for a desperate lunge outside his box, wiping out Bryan Mbeumo as the forward raced towards goal. Facing 85 minutes with ten men, Chelsea’s task became monumental.
United capitalized on their advantage. On his 200th Premier League appearance, captain Bruno Fernandes settled the home crowd’s nerves, cleverly beating the offside trap to open the scoring. The Reds dominated the first half and doubled their lead before the break, with Casemiro arriving to volley home after Luke Shaw nodded a defensive punt back into the danger area.
Just as United seemed in complete control, the momentum shifted dramatically. Casemiro, already on a yellow card, received a second booking moments before halftime, reducing both sides to ten men and setting up a tense second act.
Chelsea emerged from the tunnel with renewed vigor, dominating possession and eventually clawing a goal back through Trevoh Chalobah’s powerful header. Despite sustained pressure from the visitors, a resolute United defense held firm through a nervy injury time to clinch a much-needed three points.
After the match, Amorim was asked if the win was a statement to his critics. “It’s nothing about that,” he told Sky Sports. “People don’t have too many good things to say about our team and I understand that. I have nothing to say to the critics, they are right most of the time. But we won, and that’s a good thing for us.”
The sentiment of relief was echoed by defender Luke Shaw, who highlighted the team’s determination. “We spoke a lot before about winning,” he said. “The most important thing today was getting the three points. In the second half you could see how desperately we wanted to win. We sat back and took a lot of pressure, but we got the job done.”
