The iconic manager’s departure from Fenerbahce pushes his total career compensation for being fired over €108 million.
While José Mourinho would undoubtedly prefer to be on the sideline, the iconic manager has a significant financial silver lining after being dismissed by Fenerbahce last week. The Portuguese coach’s latest departure has unlocked a remarkable, if dubious, career milestone: over €108 million earned in compensation packages from being fired.
The 62-year-old was let go after Fenerbahce failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage, a costly miss for the Turkish club. Reports indicate that, on top of missing out on vital tournament revenue, the club must now pay Mourinho €15 million for the early termination of his contract, which was set to run until next summer.
This payout pushes Mourinho’s total career earnings from severance packages to a staggering €108.1 million. Fenerbahce joins a long list of elite clubs that have paid to part ways with the manager, including AS Roma, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea—who have done so twice. His highest single pay-off came from Manchester United, a sum of €22 million.

Despite the frequent dismissals, Mourinho remains a respected figure in the football world. He has recently hinted at a desire to one day manage the Portuguese national team. For now, as he enjoys his unexpected—and highly lucrative—break, current Portugal manager Roberto Martinez may feel the pressure mounting from the shadow of the beloved “Special One.”
