They Can’t Stand Our Joy: Laporta Hits Back at Real Madrid Criticism

Barcelona president defends club’s revival at supporters’ event, with injured star Dani Olmo by his side.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta used the inauguration of a new supporters’ club in Terrassa on Thursday to launch a fiery defense of his club, taking direct aim at Real Madrid president Florentino Perez amid an ongoing war of words.

Speaking at the event for the ‘Penya 1900’ fan group, where he was accompanied by injured playmaker Dani Olmo, Laporta suggested Barcelona’s resurgence has become a source of irritation for their historic rivals.

“What I wanted to tell you is that we have managed to turn the situation around, that the institution is strong, and that joy has returned to Barcelona,” Laporta stated, prompting knowing laughter from the crowd. “It seems that some people can’t stand it.”

He continued, sharpening his focus: “Joy has returned to Barça fans, and others, to divert attention from their own shortcomings, have to talk only about Barça.” The remarks were a clear reference to recent public accusations from Perez regarding the ‘Negreira case’, a refereeing scandal that has embroiled Barcelona.

Laporta promised a more detailed rebuttal in time. “I’ll have time to talk about this later… because I think it’s getting out of hand,” he said.

Striking a defiant tone, the president framed support for the club as a form of active defense. “Loving Barça means defending the club against everything and everyone,” he asserted, highlighting the club’s 126-year history and its identity.

Shifting to on-field matters, Laporta emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s current momentum. “We are in first place and four points ahead of the second-place team,” he noted, referring to their La Liga position.

He also shared warm praise for Dani Olmo, who attended despite a recent injury. “He’s special. Very good, one of our own, a great person,” Laporta said. “They didn’t want us to register him, but here he is. I hope that with the skill he has on his right foot, he’ll help us win the Champions League.”

The event underscored a president in combative mood, celebrating Barcelona’s revival while readying for battles both on and off the pitch.
