Thomas Tuchel Poised for England Manager Role Amid Manchester United Links

Former Chelsea boss reportedly in advanced talks to replace Gareth Southgate as England’s permanent manager.

Thomas Tuchel, 51, has emerged as a strong candidate to become England’s new permanent manager, according to reports, with negotiations said to be progressing rapidly. The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager has been out of work since leaving Bayern at the end of last season but is now reportedly close to agreeing on a deal with the English FA.

Tuchel, who led Chelsea to a Champions League triumph during his time at Stamford Bridge, had been linked with a potential move to Manchester United earlier this summer. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his recruitment team were said to be considering Tuchel as a replacement for Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the season, but the club ultimately chose to stick with the Dutchman. Despite that decision, Ten Hag remains under pressure, with United winning only two of their first seven Premier League games this season.

While Tuchel remains a possible successor at Old Trafford, he is now reportedly being considered for the England role following Gareth Southgate’s departure after England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Lee Carsley, who had been coaching the U21s, was appointed as interim manager and won his first two games before suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Greece in the Nations League on Thursday, diminishing his chances of securing the job permanently.

According to the German outlet Wert TV, talks between Tuchel and the English FA are “well advanced,” with an agreement potentially imminent. Should Tuchel be appointed, he would bring extensive experience to the England team, having managed top clubs across Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.

Carsley, reflecting on the speculation, expressed surprise that he was initially considered a strong contender for the permanent role, saying, “I was quite surprised after the last camp, in terms of like ‘the job’s mine to lose.’ No, my remit has been clear from the start. I’m doing three camps, there are three games left, and then hopefully I’ll be going back to the U21s.”

With Tuchel’s potential appointment on the horizon, England’s search for a new permanent manager could soon be concluded, as they look to rebuild following their Euro 2024 disappointment.
