German manager commits to home Euros after perfect World Cup qualifying campaign
Thomas Tuchel has signed a new deal to remain as England manager until 2028, committing to lead the Three Lions into a home European Championship after guiding them through World Cup qualifying with a perfect record.
The 52-year-old took charge in January 2025 on an 18-month contract but has now agreed a two-year extension that will keep him at the helm through Euro 2028, which England will host alongside Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“It was me in the beginning that wanted a short-term contract,” Tuchel said. “I was not sure what’s coming in international football. But very soon, I fell in love with the job and the role. I was from the first day very committed and very proud.”
His backroom staff – Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne – have also agreed new deals.
Tuchel’s England have won all eight World Cup qualifiers, scoring 22 goals and conceding none. The campaign included 5-0 thrashings of Serbia and Latvia. The only defeat of his tenure came in a summer friendly against Senegal with a rotated side.
“I felt in the last half-a-year, especially what we’re building and the spirit growing and having extraordinary results, it’s just a pleasure to extend and try to complete the full cycle of two tournaments,” Tuchel said.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said securing Tuchel early removes potential distraction before the World Cup. “He was the right person for the job when he joined us, and he has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. There is simply no better candidate available in world football.”
Before the World Cup begins in June, England will face New Zealand on June 6 and Costa Rica on June 10 in Florida warm-up games. During next month’s international break, they will take on Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.
Tuchel acknowledged the rare opportunity of leading England at a home Euros influenced his decision. “To now be in charge, it’s just an amazing opportunity and we will put all the effort in to make everyone proud,” he said. “This is nothing but a dream come true.”
