Tinubu’s Legal Representative Explains Certificate Controversy Amid Election Challenge

In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Wole Afolabi, the legal representative for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Tinubu’s academic certificate. Afolabi cited a mix-up at Chicago State University as the reason behind the peculiar “F” designation, typically indicating female, on the President’s certificate.

This revelation comes amidst the legal challenge posed by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is contesting Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 election. Atiku filed a case at the District Court in Northern Illinois, leading to an order for Chicago State University to release Tinubu’s academic records.

During the interview, Afolabi explained that the “F” on Tinubu’s certificate was due to a mix-up at the university. He said “The transcript that was provided by Southwest College indicated F. It was clear. All of the other particulars did match information of President Bola Tinubu. Now, the registrar was interviewed on why the discrepancies. He said the person applying for the school ticked the box of a male not a female and when the admission letter was issued it was issued to Mr Tinubu. When the question was put to Dr West Brown, he said it is not unusual for universities to mix up. He (West Brown) has been to several universities. It is possible.”

When questioned about discrepancies in the signatures on the certificate, Afolabi emphasized that certificates were not issued at the time of graduation but upon application. He suggested that the person who issued the certificate Tinubu submitted to INEC might not have been at the university in 1979.

In response to Afolabi’s explanation, Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku, expressed skepticism about Tinubu’s attendance at Chicago State University. Sowunmi highlighted concerns about conflicting information and the “F” designation linked to a female name on the certificate, casting doubt on Tinubu’s actual enrollment at the institution.

As the legal battle over Tinubu’s academic records unfolds, both parties present their arguments in the ongoing case at the District Court in Northern Illinois. The mix-up at Chicago State University adds a layer of complexity to the controversy surrounding the President’s academic credentials.
