Tiwa Savage Reveals Harrowing ‘Sex-for-Promotion’ Pressure in Nigerian Music

The superstar shares personal stories of losing an endorsement and gigs for refusing sexual advances from powerful male executives.

In a powerful and candid discussion, renowned Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has pulled back the curtain on one of the music industry’s darkest open secrets: the pervasive pressure on women to trade sexual favors for career advancement. Speaking on a panel organized by Entertainment Week Africa, Savage shared her own harrowing experiences with this systemic issue.

She revealed that throughout her career, she was explicitly told that securing a spot on major shows depended on her agreeing to personally “see” certain influential male chairmen. The situation escalated when she lost a significant endorsement deal after refusing a co-owner of the company’s invitation to join him on a holiday in Dubai.

“That was when I realised that they don’t value my talent but my body,” Savage stated, reflecting on the painful incident. She explained that her confident, stylish branding was misinterpreted, ultimately hurting her career. “I was only flaunting [my body] as part of branding. It ended up hurting me because that is all they were seeing.”

Her testimony sheds a stark light on the toxic hurdles women continue to face, highlighting how talent is often overshadowed by predatory demands from men in power.
