Tiwa Savage Reveals She Thought Hit Song ‘Dorobucci’ Was “Crap” Before Recording

The superstar recalls hearing the Mavin Records anthem on her wedding trip and doubting its potential, only for it to become a massive hit.

In a surprising confession, award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has revealed that she initially dismissed the Mavin Records anthem “Dorobucci” as a “crap song,” completely unaware that she would soon become one of its featured stars.

During a recent interview, the singer recounted the story from her wedding trip to Dubai, where Mavin boss Don Jazzy was repeatedly playing the track’s early demo. “I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a crap song,” Savage admitted, laughing at the memory. She had no idea at the time that the beat was being crafted for what would become a historic collective track for the label.

The plot thickened after her wedding when Don Jazzy urgently requested she return to Nigeria, cutting into her honeymoon plans for “one record.” Upon arriving at the studio and hearing the fully produced version with her fellow Mavin artists, her disbelief grew. “I was flabbergasted,” she said. “I was so angry… because this had happened with ‘Eminado’ too and I did not like it.”

So skeptical was she of the song’s potential that Tiwa was the last artist to record her verse. “I was just looking at everybody in the studio, like, ‘do you guys like this really?’” she recalled.

Despite her strong initial doubts, “Dorobucci” went on to become one of the biggest Afrobeats anthems of 2014. The singer ended her story with a tribute to Don Jazzy’s hit-making intuition, concluding, “It turned out to be phenomenal. So shout out as always to Don Jazzy.”
