Toke Makinwa Opens Up About Marriage, Optimism, and Debunks Rumors (video)

The media personality reflects on her past and looks forward to love again at 40

Celebrated Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has revealed her willingness to give marriage another chance, even as she recently celebrated her milestone 40th birthday. Speaking on a podcast hosted by British-Nigerian presenter Madame Joyce, Makinwa described marriage as a “beautiful institution” despite its inherent challenges.

Reflecting on Marriage and Lessons Learned

Makinwa candidly revisited her first marriage to businessman Maje Ayida, which ended in 2017 after three years and amid public controversy. Despite the difficulties she faced, she remains hopeful about love and the possibility of remarrying.

Addressing misconceptions about her views on men, she said, “People always think I hate men or that I’m a feminist who bashes men. I have been married before, and marriage is one of the most beautiful institutions.”

Drawing a vivid analogy, she compared marriage to the dynamics of sibling relationships. “At first, it’s all fun and excitement—matching pajamas, sharing everything. But eventually, you’re like, ‘Close my door! Who wore my shoes? When are you leaving?’”

Makinwa didn’t shy away from sharing the highs and lows of her previous experience. “There were days I rushed home to share everything with my ex-husband. And then there were days I thought, ‘This can’t be life; this must be hell.’ It didn’t work out back then, but I still believe in the institution and want to try again.”

Optimism for the Future

While Makinwa is open to love, she emphasized patience, saying, “It hasn’t happened yet. Maybe it’s not God’s time. Whenever He’s ready, I just hope I’m not wrinkled!” she joked.

Addressing Rumors

Makinwa also cleared up speculation that she secretly married her rumored partner, Farouk Umar. She clarified that the event sparking the rumors was a Thanksgiving celebration, not a wedding.

“Farouk is my bestie,” she said, emphasizing their close but platonic relationship.

A Journey of Hope

Despite past challenges, Toke Makinwa’s openness to love and personal growth highlights her enduring optimism. Her candid reflections resonate with many, showcasing her resilience and belief in finding happiness again.
