Spurs Test Red Devils’ Resolve as Young Midfielder Faces Uncertain Future at Old Trafford
Tottenham Hotspur have made a surprise enquiry about signing Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, according to reports, as the 20-year-old’s contract negotiations continue to stall. The England international, whose current deal runs until 2027, has emerged as an unexpected target for Spurs, who are closely monitoring his situation.
United’s Summer Clearout Continues
The Red Devils have already offloaded Marcus Rashford, who joined Barcelona on loan this week, and remain open to selling Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia to free up funds. Despite making three signings—Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon—United still want reinforcements in attack, midfield, and goalkeeper.
However, Mainoo’s future has become a growing concern. While manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen to add another midfielder, the club’s inability to tie down the academy graduate has raised eyebrows. With the World Cup looming, regular playing time could be crucial for Mainoo, potentially opening the door for a move.
Spurs See an Opportunity
Tottenham, aware of the contract standoff, have reportedly asked about Mainoo’s availability and believe they have a genuine chance of securing his signature. Chelsea are also monitoring the situation, with sources suggesting the youngster could push for a transfer if his role at United becomes uncertain.
Neville’s Plea: “Build Around Mainoo”
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged the club to retain and develop Mainoo, calling him a player worth building around.
“If we can’t give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that midfield two, then what are we doing?” Neville said. “A top club would want him—why can’t we make him a top player? We should be building around him, not letting him go.”
With Spurs now lurking and Mainoo’s long-term status unresolved, the coming weeks could prove pivotal in determining whether the highly rated midfielder stays at Old Trafford or seeks a fresh challenge elsewhere.
