Manchester United are scraping the striker barrel for a short-term deal and face competition from Arsenal for an unwanted Chelsea star…
Good strikers are precious commodities right now and barrels are being scraped to find even half decent ones. Manchester United are perhaps most desperate to land one after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and their apparent interest in Wout Weghorst, with all due respect, suggests they’ve scoured the market pretty thoroughly.
Weghorst is on loan from Burnley at Besiktas, for whom he scored the winner against Kasimpasa on Friday before apparently bidding the fans farewell. He thinks he’s off to United, but his coach wasn’t all that happy. “For Weghorst to say goodbye, he not only has to greet the audience but also needs to talk to the club,” Senol Gunes said. “Nothing like that happened formally. I heard about the development but it’s not clear yet.”
Should Besiktas dig their heels in, United could move for former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.
They face competition from Arsenal according to La Repubblica, for the 25-year-old, whose ‘future at Roma remains uncertain’.
Having scored 27 goals in his debut season for Jose Mourinho’s side, he’s managed just four in 21 appearances this term. Despite this, he’s unlikely to be a cheap option given Chelsea have the option to buy him back for £70m at the end of the season.
If either Arsenal or United are truly interested, it’s likely they will have to wait until the summer in any case.
AN ERIC FOR ERIK
United can’t wait, and if they were to, they would probably be chasing England’s top striker rather than the fourth or fifth choice. Anyway, they’ll need a short-term loan before any possible move for Harry Kane and another bruising Premier League striker flop they’re interested in is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who’s made quite the career for himself as a backup striker since his stint at Stoke.
After five goals in 31 games for The Potters he moved to Paris Saint-Germain and then Bayern Munich, for whom he’s scored an impressive 29 goals in 74 games.
Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg took to Twitter to state the Premier League side’s interest in the 33-year-old is ‘concrete’.
There has been ‘intensive’ courting from United but the move is thought unlikely as although Bayern have been linked with a handful of strikers, their priority is on extending Choupo-Moting’s deal.
DANSO AND DOUE
Newcastle are already ‘actively working’ to build a squad ready to compete in the Champions League next season.
Jumping the gun a touch perhaps, but Jeunes Footeux (via Sport Witness) claims the Magpies have set their sights on RC Lens star Kevin Danso and Rennes’ Desire Doue.
Danso has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Ligue 1 and it’s thought he would be available for €35-40m at the end of the season.
Doue meanwhile, despite being just 17, has a ‘maturity and vision of the game well above his age.
Rennes are well aware of the attacking midfielder’s ability and potential and it would take a very significant offer to steal him away, and Newcastle would likely face stiff competition.
