Real Sociedad star remains loyal to boyhood club despite Premier League interest.
Manchester City is the latest club attempting to persuade Martin Zubimendi to leave Real Sociedad, following unsuccessful bids from Arsenal and Liverpool, according to The Mirror. Zubimendi, the 25-year-old midfield star who helped Spain secure the Euro 2024 title, has become one of Europe’s hottest transfer prospects, attracting interest from top clubs thanks to his €60 million release clause.
Zubimendi, however, has repeatedly shown reluctance to leave his boyhood club in San Sebastian. Both Arsenal and Liverpool made concerted efforts to bring him to the Premier League, with Liverpool particularly optimistic about a deal. Despite their attempts, Zubimendi declined, shocking Liverpool by turning down their lucrative offer.
Now, Manchester City sees Zubimendi as a possible replacement for Rodri, who may miss the rest of the season due to an ACL injury. Although Rodri has expressed hope for a return before the end of the campaign, City wants to strengthen its midfield in January.
While some believe Zubimendi could now be persuaded, his unwavering loyalty to Real Sociedad suggests otherwise. The midfielder has repeatedly voiced his commitment, stating that staying with the club was a decision from the heart rather than one driven by financial gain, dismissing any notion of prioritizing the Premier League’s appeal over his roots in San Sebastian.
