Transfer Rumours: Arsenal Lead Chase for Atlético’s Prized Striker Julián Álvarez

Gunners explore blockbuster summer move, but face €100m price tag and fierce competition from Europe’s elite.

Arsenal have positioned themselves at the front of the queue to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez this summer, according to reports. The North London club are eager to reunite sporting director Andrea Berta—who originally brought Álvarez to Atlético—with the prolific Argentine, and have already initiated talks with the player’s camp to test the waters.

Since his move to Madrid in 2024, the 25-year-old has cemented his status as one of the world’s most lethal forwards, attracting serious interest from Barcelona—who see him as a dream successor to Robert Lewandowski—and Paris Saint-Germain. Chelsea have also made exploratory contact, setting the stage for a potential bidding war.

ESPN confirms that Arsenal, driven by Mikel Arteta’s desire to add elite firepower, are seriously exploring a deal. However, any move will come at a steep cost: Atlético are expected to demand a fee well over €100 million to part with their star this summer.

If a deal can be struck, Álvarez would immediately transform Arsenal’s attacking line. He would be expected to walk into the starting eleven, joining a formidable spine that includes David Raya in goal, a settled defence of Jurriën Timber, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and Riccardo Calafiori, and a midfield anchored by Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli would provide the width in what would be one of Europe’s most complete sides.

Such a marquee signing, however, would cast doubt over the futures of current Arsenal strikers Gabriel Jesus and Viktor Gyokeres. Jesús, in particular, could become a casualty, with a sale considered feasible if Álvarez arrives. Gyokeres, after a modest first season in England, would likely be relegated to a backup role.

For now, Arsenal are monitoring the situation closely, weighing a record-breaking bid for a player who could be the final piece in their pursuit of major silverware.
