Blues target Premier League return for Argentine striker; Arsenal also monitoring as Atlético faces summer sale.
Chelsea have made a formal opening move in their pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, lodging an initial offer of roughly €85 million to bring the Argentine star back to the Premier League this summer.
The 25-year-old, who enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Manchester City before his move to Spain, has flourished in Madrid, scoring 40 goals in 84 appearances. Despite his success, Álvarez is understood to be keen on a Premier League return, and Atlético are prepared to cash in. Chelsea see him as a marquee attacking target, even as they prepare to welcome other young forwards to the squad.
The Blues face competition from Arsenal, who have also kept close tabs on Álvarez amid Viktor Gyökeres’ inconsistent form. However, Chelsea appear to have taken the first concrete step. While Atlético could hold out for a fee closer to €150 million, Álvarez’s desire to move and the structure of Chelsea’s offer could accelerate negotiations.
It has also been reported that Chelsea midfielder and fellow Argentine Enzo Fernández has been encouraged to discuss a potential switch with his international teammate, adding a personal touch to the club’s pursuit.
Should the move materialize, Álvarez would join a forward line that already includes Liam Delap and João Pedro, offering Chelsea a proven, high-value goalscorer with Premier League and Champions League pedigree.
