Blues in Advanced Talks for €60m Defender as Rosenior Seeks Key January Reinforcement
Chelsea are in advanced negotiations to sign Rennes defender Jérémy Jacquet in a deal that could reach a club-record €60 million for the French side. The move aims to answer manager Liam Rosenior’s public call for defensive reinforcements before the January window slams shut.
The 20-year-old centre-back has been a steadfast target for Chelsea since last summer, with top insiders now indicating a deal is within reach. “Chelsea and Jérémy Jacquet is one to watch,” reported transfer expert Ben Jacobs, who noted a mood of “cautious optimism” at Stamford Bridge about finalizing the signing.
Securing Jacquet, however, requires convincing a reluctant seller. Rennes are in strong form and fighting for European qualification, making them hostile to a mid-season departure. Head coach Habib Beye set a stern tone earlier this month, stating any club would need to be “very, very persuasive” to pry away their prized asset.
That persuasion is expected to come in the form of a monumental fee, fueled further by interest from Bayern Munich. While the German giants are skeptical of their chances given Chelsea’s progress, their attention has only strengthened Rennes’ bargaining position.
For Chelsea, the potential outlay represents a significant gamble on Jacquet’s future, as his current estimated value sits at just €17.8 million. The club’s hierarchy must now decide if the talented Frenchman is the right defensive cornerstone for Rosenior’s project, and if so, pay a historic price to bring him to West London before the deadline.
