Spanish Winger’s Preference a Setback for Premier League Giants

Rising Spanish star Nico Williams has reportedly set his sights on a move to FC Barcelona, dealing a blow to Arsenal and Chelsea, who were both vying for his signature. According to journalist Toni Juanmarti, the Athletic Bilbao winger has made it clear that his preference is to join the Catalan club rather than explore opportunities in the Premier League.

Barcelona’s interest in Williams dates back to the summer transfer window, but financial constraints prevented the Blaugrana from securing a deal. Despite this setback, the club remains keen on signing the 22-year-old, whose reported release clause is €58 million.

Arsenal and Chelsea had also entered the race for Williams, with the Gunners eyeing a January move to bolster their attack amidst a faltering title challenge. Chelsea, on the other hand, were planning a summer swoop. However, Williams’ desire to remain in Spain and team up with national teammates such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Gavi appears to have tilted the scales in Barcelona’s favor.

Williams has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers, known for his blistering pace and technical ability. His performances at Euro 2024, where he played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumph, solidified his reputation. Notably, Williams scored in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the final and delivered a standout display against Italy, where his relentless attacking play led to the decisive goal.

Since making his debut for Athletic Bilbao in 2021, Williams has netted 22 goals in 144 appearances. Internationally, he has scored four goals in 24 matches for Spain, including appearances at the 2022 World Cup.

Despite a quieter season with two goals in 22 games so far, Williams’ potential and achievements have made him a sought-after talent in European football. Whether Barcelona can finalize a deal amid ongoing financial challenges remains to be seen, but Williams’ intentions are now clear.
