The Reds star reportedly eyes a move to Spain as his contract nears expiration.
Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly informed the club of his intention to leave Anfield, with Real Madrid as his preferred destination, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
Set for a New Chapter
The 26-year-old full-back is in the final months of his contract, which expires at the end of the season, making him eligible to negotiate with other clubs starting January 1. While Liverpool have made several attempts to extend his stay, Alexander-Arnold has reportedly made it clear he is ready for a new challenge.
The England international has been a mainstay for Liverpool since making his debut in 2016. Over his 332 appearances, he has played a crucial role in the Reds’ success, helping them secure the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cups, and a Club World Cup.
Real Madrid’s Interest
Real Madrid are reportedly eager to sign Alexander-Arnold as a long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal, whose season-ending knee injury has left a void in the Spanish giants’ defensive lineup. The La Liga side is open to waiting until the summer to secure him on a free transfer but is also considering a cut-price deal in January.
The full-back’s close relationship with England teammate and current Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham is said to have influenced his decision. Alexander-Arnold has reportedly sought insights from Bellingham about life at the Bernabéu, further solidifying his interest in the move.
Liverpool’s Dilemma
Liverpool now face a difficult decision: retain Alexander-Arnold until the end of the season and risk losing him on a free transfer or cash in during the January transfer window. Despite the uncertainty, the Reds remain focused on their Premier League campaign, where they currently hold a six-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.
Other Contract Concerns
Alexander-Arnold isn’t the only high-profile Liverpool star approaching the end of his contract. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also set to become free agents next summer and will be free to negotiate with other clubs from January 1.
As the January transfer window approaches, Liverpool may have to make tough decisions about their key players while Real Madrid await their opportunity to strengthen their squad.
