Captain’s future in doubt as he weighs final career move, with club’s direction and Champions League football key to his decision.
Manchester United may need to make Bruno Fernandes the club’s highest-paid player to prevent his departure this summer, according to a report, amid claims the captain has grown “disillusioned” behind the scenes.
The Portuguese midfielder, 31, is said to be weighing his future at Old Trafford, with interest expected from clubs in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. While he rejected a move to the Saudi Pro League last summer, The Mirror reports that Fernandes is deeply concerned by the club’s direction, including frequent managerial changes and operational instability.
His next contract is likely to be the last major one of his career, placing United in a difficult position. Club bosses are reportedly “desperate” for him to stay but will need to table a staggering new deal worth around £400,000 per week—a significant raise on his current terms, which run until 2027.
While interim manager Michael Carrick has made a positive impression, Fernandes is prepared to wait until the end of the season before deciding. A key factor will be the identity of the next permanent boss and whether United can secure Champions League football.
Fernandes came close to an exit last year and, with his patience tested, the club now faces a costly battle to retain its skipper and star performer.
