Transfer Rumours: Viktor Gyökeres Sparks Transfer Interest Amid Sporting CP Struggles

Barcelona and Manchester United Among Clubs Eyeing Swedish Striker

Viktor Gyökeres, one of Europe’s most in-form strikers, has caught the attention of top clubs across the continent. The 26-year-old Swedish forward has scored an impressive 34 goals in 29 appearances for club and country this season, solidifying his reputation as a prolific finisher. However, recent managerial changes at Sporting CP have caused the team’s form to dip, leading Gyökeres to reconsider his future at the club.

Barcelona’s Interest in Gyökeres

According to El Nacional, Barcelona views Gyökeres as a potential long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose influence in the team’s attack is waning at age 36. Gyökeres’ physicality, athleticism, and clinical finishing make him a strong candidate to fill the role as Barça looks to rebuild its forward line.

Manchester United in the Mix

Gyökeres has also been linked with Manchester United, where Ruben Amorim, his former coach at Sporting, recently took over as manager. While the Swedish striker has been suggested as a possible target for United, Owen Hargreaves, a former United midfielder, has advised the club to focus on developing Rasmus Højlund.

Højlund, a 21-year-old Danish striker, recently scored twice in United’s Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzeň. Hargreaves told TNT Sports:
“[Højlund] is a really similar profile to Gyökeres in terms of physicality and size. He’s improving and can become Amorim’s key center-forward at United.”

Gyökeres’ Recent Form

Since Amorim’s departure from Sporting in November, Gyökeres’ scoring form has slowed, netting just once since the managerial shift. This dip in form has added urgency to speculation about his future, with Arsenal also rumored to be monitoring the situation.

As the January transfer window approaches, Gyökeres’ future will likely be a key topic of discussion. Whether he stays at Sporting or makes a high-profile move to clubs like Barcelona or Manchester United, his next steps could shape the trajectory of his burgeoning career.
