Big transfer moves as Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea look to bolster their squads
Arsenal are eyeing a deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, while Manchester United have drawn up a shortlist of potential left-back signings. Meanwhile, Chelsea have made an offer for Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
Arsenal Pursues Sporting Lisbon Striker Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal are set to move for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres after nearing an agreement for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.
The London club hopes to sign Gyokeres, who has been a long-term target after scoring 43 goals for Sporting Lisbon last season. However, they will need to meet Sporting’s £85 million demand for the Swedish striker.
According to The Sun, “Calafiori has given Arsenal his word after an agreement was reached with Bologna. The transfer has been held up by a row between the Serie A side and his former club Basel over a sell-on clause. Gyokeres has been a long-term target after scoring 43 goals for Sporting Lisbon last season following his arrival from Coventry. The Swedish striker would cost £85 million, with Sporting unwilling to sell for less than his release clause.”
Manchester United Seeks Left-Back Amid Injury Crisis
Manchester United are stepping up their search for a left-back amid an injury crisis. Luke Shaw struggled to be fit for Euro 2024, and Tyrell Malacia is still not ready for next season. The Mirror reports that United have identified three potential targets: Feyenoord’s David Hancko, former Chelsea star Marcos Alonso, and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell.
The Mirror states, “Manchester United are stepping up their search for a left-back – with Tyrell Malacia no closer to returning to action. Malacia, who has not played for United for 14 months, has not been included in the squad for the club’s US tour. With England star Luke Shaw on an extended break following his involvement at Euro 2024, United do not have a recognized senior left-back on the three-game tour of the States. Among United’s potential left-back targets are Feyenoord’s David Hancko and former Chelsea star Marcos Alonso, who is a free agent having left Barcelona at the end of last season. Another target United have looked at is Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, who could be landed cheaper than his market value, given he only has a year left on his current deal.”
Chelsea Bids for Villarreal Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen
Chelsea has made an initial £17 million offer for Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen as they seek to strengthen their goalkeeping options. The Danish under-21 international is valued at £21 million, meaning Chelsea will need to increase their bid.
The Daily Mail reports, “Chelsea have offered £17 million plus add-ons for Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen in a bid to strengthen their goalkeeping options. The 22-year-old is thought to be keen to join the west London club and compete with current No 1 Robert Sanchez, amid growing interest from Saudi side Al-Ittihad. Jorgensen served as the La Liga club’s first-choice keeper last season, making 37 appearances in all competitions as they narrowly missed out on a European place. The 22-year-old is a regular for Denmark’s Under-21 side, having previously represented Sweden at multiple youth levels. It is believed Chelsea are also offering £1.7 million (€2 million) in add-ons as part of the deal. Mail Sport understands Villarreal are holding out for £21 million.”
These transfer moves highlight the ongoing efforts of top Premier League clubs to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.
