Defender Holding Out for Higher Wages as Contract Talks Stall
Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly turned down the club’s latest contract offer, holding out for a significant pay increase amid growing interest from Real Madrid.
According to The Sun, Liverpool offered the 25-year-old right-back a £70,000 weekly raise, which would take his wages to £250,000 per week—a step up from his current £180,000 weekly salary. However, Alexander-Arnold is reportedly seeking closer to £350,000 per week, a figure that matches Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah’s pay.
Real Madrid Waiting in the Wings
The contract impasse has sparked speculation over Alexander-Arnold’s future, particularly as his deal expires at the end of the season. From January 1, he would be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs, and Real Madrid have long admired the England international.
Respected journalist David Ornstein previously noted that the situation is unusual for a player so young, loyal, and integral to Liverpool’s success:
“The England international has shown firm loyalty to Liverpool… but there has been no breakthrough in talks. Real Madrid’s admiration is well documented, and suitors will try to entice him to leave.”
The stalemate now leaves Liverpool under pressure to secure the future of one of their key players.
Desire to Stay, But Negotiations Continue
Despite Real Madrid’s interest, reports suggest Alexander-Arnold is not eager to leave Merseyside. The right-back reportedly told close friends he is happy at Liverpool, particularly as he has recently settled into a £5 million mansion in Cheshire and begun a new relationship.
When asked about his future, Alexander-Arnold was measured, hinting that discussions would remain behind closed doors:
“I have been at the club for 20 years and I have signed four or five contract extensions. None of those have been played out in public. This one won’t be either.”
Liverpool’s Challenge
The contract standoff comes at a critical time for Liverpool, who are enjoying a stellar season under new manager Arne Slot. The Reds currently sit top of the Premier League and lead their Champions League group, showcasing strong form in Slot’s debut campaign following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
