Nigerian Captain Draws on Team’s Success at Abidjan Stadium Ahead of Pivotal Match
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has voiced optimism ahead of Nigeria’s decisive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Benin Republic. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Troost-Ekong emphasized the team’s positive track record at Abidjan’s Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, where they recently achieved key victories, including wins over Guinea-Bissau, Angola, and Cameroon.
These previous successes have boosted the Super Eagles’ morale, and Troost-Ekong believes playing on familiar ground will strengthen Nigeria’s bid to secure AFCON qualification. “The last time we played Benin, we won at home,” he noted, acknowledging Benin’s quality and the familiarity of their coach, Gernot Rohr, who previously led Nigeria’s national team for five years.
Troost-Ekong acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed confidence. “We know Benin will be tough, and Rohr knows our team well. But in this stadium, we have amazing memories from earlier this year,” he said. “We feel at home here in Abidjan, and I’m confident we can get the job done.”
The Super Eagles are set to take on Benin tonight at 20:00 GMT+1 in Abidjan, aiming to build on their recent 3-0 victory over the Cheetahs and move closer to AFCON qualification.
