The England coach addresses his star midfielder’s visible frustration after substituting him late in a 2-0 qualifying win over Albania.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has issued a firm but calm response after Jude Bellingham was visibly upset at being substituted during Sunday’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Albania.
The incident occurred just minutes after the 22-year-old Real Madrid star received a yellow card. As substitute Morgan Rogers prepared to come on, television cameras caught Bellingham throwing his arms up in frustration on the pitch.
In his post-match comments, Tuchel was clear that the midfielder must fall in line. “That’s the decision, and he has to accept the decision,” Tuchel stated. “His friend is waiting on the sideline, so you need to accept it, respect it, and keep on going.”
This is not the first time the coach and his high-profile player have had a public disagreement. Acknowledging the moment, Tuchel added, “I’m going to have to review it. I saw that he was not happy. I don’t want to make it bigger at the moment than it is.”
The minor clash of wills momentarily overshadowed what was otherwise a perfect qualifying campaign for England, who won all eight of their games without conceding a single goal.
Tuchel was full of praise for his squad’s overall achievement, saying, “Congratulations to them, it was a pleasure to fight with them and push them from the sidelines.” The focus will now turn to ensuring the team’s harmony remains intact as they build towards the World Cup finals.
