Nigerian-Mozambican Model’s Inclusion Sparks Debate on National Representation
Controversial reality TV personality Josephine Ijeoma Otabor, widely known as Phyna, has voiced her concerns over the admission of Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 beauty pageant. Adetshina, a model of Nigerian and Mozambican descent, had previously withdrawn from the Miss South Africa 2024 contest due to questions surrounding her nationality.
After being invited to join the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant following her withdrawal from the Miss SA competition, Adetshina announced in a video released by the pageant organizers on Wednesday that she would be participating. Despite her inclusion, Phyna took to her X account to express reservations about how Adetshina’s participation might impact the prospects of “typical Nigerian queens.”
Phyna remarked, “Just thinking out loud oh. I’m in support of Chidimma o, but this one she now wants to rep us like this…. What will now happen to our own typical Nigerian Queens that have been preparing for it too? Omo I for advise her to leave pageant first or for this year… then go next tym.”
Phyna’s comments have sparked a broader discussion about the representation and selection criteria for beauty pageants, particularly when contestants have diverse cultural and national backgrounds.
