Football’s European governing body is racing to arrange an emergency meeting as senior figures push for a ban, a move that could trigger a major geopolitical clash within the sport.
Uefa is under increasing pressure to suspend Israel’s football federation from international competitions, prompting its leadership to seek an emergency executive committee meeting “as soon as possible.” The push comes after a United Nations panel called on global sports bodies to ban Israeli teams as a response to the ongoing war in Gaza.
This sudden escalation has forced football’s powerful leaders to confront an issue they have largely avoided, potentially sparking a governance crisis that pits Uefa against world governing body FIFA and draws the sport deeper into international politics. The situation is being closely watched, as any decision could test the relationship between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted in North America.
The core of the argument for many within Uefa is a sense of contradiction. They point to the swift decision to ban Russian teams following the invasion of Ukraine and question why Israel should be treated differently. Historically, football authorities have been reluctant to take stances on geopolitical conflicts, fearing it would force them to adjudicate on crises worldwide. However, the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where the UN has declared a famine, has caused many national associations to shift their positions.
According to sources, a significant number of Uefa member associations would now support a ban, or are at least willing to debate it seriously. This sets the stage for a contentious vote.
The issue is fraught with complex alliances. Some insiders suggest the debate is becoming part of a wider “communications war” between Israel and Qatar. The influence of Qatar is notable, as the chairman of the powerful European Club Association (ECA), Nasser Al-Khelaifi, is a prominent Qatari figure. However, sources close to Qatar’s leadership deny allegations that the state is pressuring Uefa.
The practical consequences of a ban are immediate. Israel is scheduled to play crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Norway on October 11th and Italy on October 14th. Some Norwegian players have already expressed strong feelings about facing Israel, and there is now a real possibility that the match may not go ahead. Norway’s federation has already pledged to donate proceeds from the game to humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Further motivating the push for a ban is the Palestinian Football Association’s estimate that over 400 Palestinian players have been killed during the conflict. Uefa itself recently faced criticism for honoring a former Palestinian player without mentioning how he died.
If Uefa votes to suspend Israel, it would place immense pressure on FIFA to follow suit. However, numerous sources believe FIFA is highly unlikely to do so, given the logistical and political need to keep the United States government onside for the 2026 World Cup. A U.S. State Department spokesman has already stated they will “absolutely work to fully stop” any ban.
This mismatch could lead to a legal quagmire. If Uefa bans Israel but FIFA does not, it might still be possible for Israel to compete in World Cup qualifiers, which are FIFA tournaments organized by Uefa. This confusing scenario would almost certainly result in a challenge at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, especially if European nations refuse to play against Israel.
