Spurs Boss Insists He Won’t Be Affected by Supporters’ Backlash After Chelsea Defeat

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has vowed to stay focused despite increasing criticism from fans, following Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Thursday. The Australian boss was met with jeers from the away supporters at Stamford Bridge, who chanted, “You don’t know what you’re doing” after he substituted Brennan Johnson and Pape Sarr for Wilson Odobert and Lucas Bergvall in the second half.

The frustration from fans has been growing in recent weeks, with Tottenham languishing in 14th place in the Premier League after their 16th defeat in 30 matches. A 50th-minute header from Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez condemned Spurs to their fourth consecutive league game without a win, putting them at risk of their worst league finish since 1993-94, when they placed 15th.

Despite mounting speculation about his future at the club, Postecoglou remains defiant and insists he will not be shaken by the fan unrest.

“It doesn’t bother me. It’s not the first time they have booed my substitutions,” Postecoglou said. “If that’s what the fans feel, if they think I’m not doing a good job, they have every right to express it. They pay their money, they follow the club, and they will be here long after I’m gone.”

Postecoglou also denied claims that he was goading the fans when he cupped his ear following a VAR-disallowed goal from Sarr. “Jeez mate, it’s incredible how things are interpreted,” he remarked. “I wanted them to get excited and enjoy what we thought was a goal. If people want to read into it differently, that’s up to them. I was just trying to get some excitement.”

VAR decisions played a significant role in the match, with long reviews leading to 12 minutes of stoppage time in the second half. Postecoglou expressed frustration over the disruptions, criticizing the impact of video technology on the game.

“It’s not the same game anymore. You’re standing around for 12 minutes. It’s killing the game, but no one cares about that. They just love the drama and controversy,” he said. “They’re not interested that it’s ruining the spectacle. It’s crazy, it’s madness, but we have to accept it.”

Postecoglou’s tenure at Spurs could hinge on their Europa League campaign, with a crucial quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt looming next week. If Tottenham are to break their 17-year trophy drought, they will need a significant improvement in performances.

“We conceded a really poor goal, something that has been happening too often,” Postecoglou admitted. “That was disappointing. But I thought our response was really good. We scored and it got ruled out, then we had a couple of chances at the end.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who has also faced criticism, was relieved to see his side move back into fourth place in the league. The Blues now sit one point ahead of Manchester City in the race for Champions League qualification.

“The result is important because we are getting close to the end of the season,” Maresca said. “If we want to become a strong team, we need to learn to win in a dirty way, an ugly way. So I’m quite happy. From the first day, I’ve seen the team improve, and that’s what matters.”

As the season nears its climax, both managers will be hoping for a strong finish, but for Postecoglou, the pressure is mounting as Spurs fans grow increasingly restless.
