The Liverpool boss provided a hopeful update on Ryan Gravenberch’s fitness but dismissed questions about his own contract, insisting his sole focus is on stopping the team’s dismal run of form.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces a critical test against Aston Villa this weekend, acknowledging his team is in a difficult moment but expressing confidence they can turn their form around. The Reds head into the match having lost six of their last seven games, a dismal run that has heaped pressure on the Dutch coach.
In a pre-match press conference, Slot offered a glimmer of positive news, revealing that injured midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has returned to training and could be in contention to start. However, he pointed to a string of fitness issues as a core reason for the team’s struggles, stating the squad is currently down to just “15 or 16” available players.
While refusing to make excuses, Slot suggested the club may have been “lucky” with injuries last season and is now “unlucky.” He defended the quality of his squad but admitted the team must improve defensively, particularly in dealing with set-pieces and direct opposition tactics, which he says other managers are now using to target his side.
When asked to reflect on what he has learned during this challenging period, Slot was blunt. “Maybe learning comes later,” he said, explaining that his entire focus is on the immediate future and preparing for Villa. His determination to look forward was further emphasized when he was unexpectedly questioned about his contract, which runs until 2027. He appeared taken aback, calling it “the last question I was expecting,” and firmly stated that his only priority is getting Liverpool back to winning ways.
