Depleted Red Devils Make it Four Wins in a Row as Tottenham’s Slide Deepens into Crisis
Manchester United’s remarkable revival under caretaker boss Michael Carrick continued with a comfortable 2-0 victory over a hapless Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday. The win, United’s fourth straight, tightened their grip on a top-four spot while piling immense pressure on Spurs manager Thomas Frank.
Spurs, desperate for any spark to end their dismal run, started brightly. Conor Gallagher nearly latched onto a clever Xavi Simons pass early on, but the chance fizzed out. It proved a false dawn.
United soon took control, slicing through Tottenham’s midfield with ease. Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha both fired warning shots wide before the game’s major turning point: Spurs captain Cristian Romero saw a straight red card just before the half-hour mark for a reckless, studs-up challenge on Casemiro.
A man down, Tottenham crumbled. Seven minutes later, United broke the deadlock. After a cleared corner, the ball fell to Bryan Mbeumo on the edge of the box via teenager Kobbie Mainoo. The Cameroonian forward kept his composure, steering a calm shot through a crowd of bodies and into the bottom corner for his tenth goal of the season.
Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario kept his team in it with sharp saves before and after the break, denying Casemiro and Amad Diallo. United thought they had a second when Amad tapped in, only for the offside flag to save Spurs, who briefly threatened through Simons.
Any lingering hope for the visitors was extinguished with ten minutes to go. Diogo Dalot found his Portuguese compatriot, Bruno Fernandes, at the back post with a exquisite cross, and Fernandes guided the ball in with his shin to seal the points.
The final whistle confirmed contrasting realities. United, written off just weeks ago, are riding a wave of belief under Carrick. For Tottenham, the nightmare persists. Their winless run in the league now stretches to eight games, leaving them languishing in 14th place and staring nervously at the relegation zone, with Frank’s future appearing more uncertain by the day.
