Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has shared some names and photos of protesters who survived October 20, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shooting.
In an update released on Twitter, he shared the stories of some protesters who survived life changing injuries due to the shooting.
One of the protesters was identified as Joshua Ossai, who was at the Lekki Toll Gate during the shooting by alleged military operatives.
He lost one of his leg as a result of the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate Ossai knew he had to flee for his life at Lekki Toll Gate when soldiers started shooting live bullets at youth protesters asking for an end to police brutality.
Despite the injury, Joshua was one of a few protesters who managed to arrive ashore in faraway Ikorodu, where a Good Samaritan nursed his wounds for two weeks.
“Some people died inside the water,” he was quoted as saying.
Another victim was Olalekan Faleye had never been to the hospital before. Not even at birth. He was trained as a cobbler before working as a labourer with Black Diamond Engineering.
Faleye was also among the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate shooting.
He leg was also amputated after he was rescued by other protesters who stopped a car to ferry him to Vedic Hospital, Lekki Phase 1 for treatment.
Another victim was Joshua Samuel was close to dying. Shot in the back and losing a lot of blood, there were no guarantees of survival when he arrived at Reddington Lekki Hospital on Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Lagos or when he was transferred to their headquarters on Idowu Martins Street, Victoria Island, because of a lack of bed space at the former. Yet, if he had passed on, Samuel would not have felt any “regret or disgrace”.
Sharing the story on Twitter, Soyombo wrote;
“Tunji Odeyemi was shot in the face. Damilola Adeniyi sustained a bullet wound to the head. Lucky Philemon’s right leg was amputated.
