Former Red Devils Star Paul Parker Urges Club to Target Leicester’s Mads Hermansen as Onana’s Future Hangs in the Balance
Manchester United’s decision to replace David De Gea with Andre Onana has come under heavy scrutiny, with former defender Paul Parker branding the Cameroonian goalkeeper “useless” and urging the club to pursue Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen as a replacement. Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan last summer, has struggled to consistently impress this season, sparking debate over his future at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old was handpicked by former manager Erik ten Hag, with whom he worked at Ajax, and was brought in to modernize United’s goalkeeping department with his ability to play out from the back. While Onana showed signs of improvement after a rocky start to his United career, his form has dipped significantly this season. He currently ranks as the 15th-best goalkeeper in the Premier League, raising questions about his suitability for a club with title ambitions.
Parker, who won two Premier League titles with United in the 1990s, did not hold back in his assessment of Onana. “In an ideal world, Man United should buy a new goalkeeper to replace Onana. He’s just not good enough, and I don’t think he even looks like a goalkeeper at all,” Parker said. “Right now, I think [Altay] Bayindir should get a chance, but in the long run, the club should go for Mads Hermansen, who has single-handedly kept Leicester somewhat afloat this season.”
Hermansen, 23, has been a standout performer for Leicester in the Championship this season, earning praise for his shot-stopping ability, composure with the ball at his feet, and commanding presence. Parker believes the Danish goalkeeper has all the qualities United need. “I think he has it all. He’s a fantastic shot-stopper, he’s good with his feet, and he has a strong attitude,” Parker added. “As a center-back, I would be scared to have him behind me, but in a good way, because he has such a strong aura.”
Parker also criticized United’s handling of De Gea’s departure last summer. The Spanish goalkeeper, a fan favorite and three-time Player of the Year winner, left the club after 12 years in what Parker described as a “disgraceful” exit. “I can’t help but think about why the club let David De Gea go,” Parker said. “It was a really disgraceful way they parted with him after he was named Player of the Year three times in a row, and right now, it looks even more ridiculous because his replacement is so useless.”
With United reportedly exploring options to strengthen their squad in the summer, the goalkeeper position could become a priority if Onana’s struggles persist. However, Parker acknowledged that other areas of the team, such as defense and midfield, may take precedence in the transfer market. “The problem is probably that the goalkeeper position won’t be a priority for a new signing, as there are so many other issues in other positions that need strengthening,” he said.
As the season progresses, the pressure on Onana to prove his worth at Old Trafford will only intensify. For now, the debate over his future—and the shadow of De Gea’s departure—looms large over Manchester United’s quest to return to the top of English football.
