Despite meetings with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Real Madrid midfielder has reportedly turned down a transfer, dealing a blow to United’s summer rebuilding plans.
Manchester United’s search for a marquee midfield signing has hit a significant hurdle, with reports from Spain indicating that Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has turned down a potential move to Old Trafford.
The Uruguayan international, a key figure for the Spanish giants, is said to have rejected United’s interest despite his agent holding two meetings with club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in recent weeks. Sources suggest the 25-year-old does not view the project as his “most appealing” option, preferring instead to join a club with “institutional stability and the guarantee of competing for every title.”
This setback comes as United prepare to focus their summer spending on revamping their midfield. Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett explained the club’s strategy, stating, “Midfield is where Man Utd feel they will focus the bulk of their spend in the summer.” He added that the club “may even do two” signings in that area.
United’s data-led approach has identified several potential targets, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson—who is reportedly a top target with a price tag exceeding £100 million—Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Wolves’ João Gomes.
The pursuit of Valverde, for whom Real Madrid would demand a fee approaching €100 million, showcased United’s ambition. However, the player’s preference for a stable, title-contending environment has cooled the prospect. This follows a summer in which United spent over £200 million on five new signings, primarily attackers, after scoring among the fewest goals in the Premier League last season.
With Valverde now seemingly off the table, United’s hierarchy must pivot to other targets as they aim to solve what they see as the squad’s next key imbalance.
