Handball Controversy Mars Chelsea’s Win at Frustrated Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace supporters erupted in anger on Sunday after a controversial handball decision led to a Chelsea penalty, cementing a 3-1 defeat for the struggling Eagles.
The flashpoint came with Chelsea already 2-0 ahead. In the 59th minute, João Pedro’s close-range shot struck the arm of Palace defender Jaydee Canvot. While referee Darren England initially waved play on, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) advised a review.

After checking the monitor, England returned to the pitch and announced to a tense Selhurst Park: “After review, the ball hits Crystal Palace 23. It is an accidental handball, not deliberate, therefore it is a penalty kick.” He added, “Only a yellow card,” as he booked a distraught Canvot.
The explanation did little to calm the furious home fans, who greeted the decision with loud boos. Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández compounded their misery by coolly converting the spot-kick, sealing the three points for the visitors.
The penalty overshadowed a commanding Chelsea performance, sparked by a first-half solo goal from youngster Estêvão. João Pedro added a second shortly after the break.
Palace’s difficult afternoon worsened when Adam Wharton received a second yellow card, reducing them to ten men. A late headed consolation from Chris Richards provided scant comfort.
The result leaves Crystal Palace mired in an 11-game winless run, with a trip to Nottingham Forest awaiting next weekend. Chelsea, meanwhile, climb to fourth and turn their focus to the Champions League. For the Eagles, the frustration continues to grow.
