Swedish striker committed to Sporting CP for the season but hints at potential summer departure
Victor Gyökeres has dashed Manchester United’s hopes of signing him in January, confirming his intention to remain with Sporting CP for the rest of the season.
The 26-year-old striker, who is enjoying a prolific campaign, remains one of Europe’s most in-form forwards. He recently added to his stellar season by scoring for Sweden in their UEFA Nations League victory over Slovakia on Saturday night.
Gyökeres’ Red-Hot Form
Gyökeres has been a revelation since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. He has netted an astonishing 23 goals in 16 appearances for the Lisbon-based club this season and has contributed five goals in five matches for Sweden during the Nations League campaign.
His remarkable performances have put him on the radar of top European clubs, including Manchester United, who have struggled to find consistency in their attack.
United’s Interest and Sporting’s Changes
Speculation linking Gyökeres to Old Trafford has grown following the arrival of Ruben Amorim, Sporting’s former head coach, as Manchester United’s new manager. Amorim played a pivotal role in bringing Gyökeres to Sporting and is reportedly keen to reunite with the striker.
However, the Swede has firmly stated his commitment to Sporting for the current season, despite recent upheaval at the club, with both director of football Hugo Viana and Amorim departing.
“I want to finish this season at Sporting. I love it here,” Gyökeres said, dismissing any possibility of a January exit.

While ruling out a midseason transfer, Gyökeres left the door open for a potential summer move, emphasizing the importance of playing time in any decision about his future.
“New club? We will see when the time comes,” he said. “I want to play, that’s crucial… and there will be other factors.”
