Video Game Industry Mourns After ‘Call of Duty’ Creator Killed in California Ferrari Crash

Vince Zampella, a pioneer behind blockbuster franchises, dies in a fiery single-car accident on Angeles Crest Highway

Veteran video game developer Vince Zampella, widely known as the co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise and head of Respawn Entertainment, has died along with a passenger following a fiery crash in Southern California, authorities and local media report.

The California Highway Patrol said the single-vehicle collision happened just before 12:45 p.m. Sunday on the winding Angeles Crest Highway through the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles. A red Ferrari driven by Zampella veered off the roadway shortly after exiting a tunnel and struck a concrete barrier, according to officials.

An eyewitness video circulating online captures the dramatic moments leading up to the crash. The footage shows a red Ferrari losing control while exiting a tunnel onto a highway, swerving sharply before slamming into a concrete barrier. Within moments of the impact, the vehicle is seen engulfed in flames. People who were nearby rushed toward the wreckage, desperately trying to help the driver and the passenger inside the car. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward, but the situation had already turned dire.

Zampella, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle was ejected and later died in hospital, authorities said. The identities of the second victim have not been officially released.

Zampella’s career spanned decades and helped shape some of the most influential titles in modern gaming. In addition to co-founding Infinity Ward, where Call of Duty began, he later led Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind hits including Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined what caused the Ferrari to leave the road.

Fans and colleagues have begun paying tribute to Zampella’s legacy, noting his impact on both players and fellow developers worldwide.
