Viktor Gyökeres Accepts Fine to Seal £63m Arsenal Move After Strike Standoff

Swedish Striker Forfeits July Salary as Sporting CP Greenlight Record Transfer Following Tense Negotiations

Viktor Gyökeres has agreed to surrender his €350,000 (£306,000) July wages to finally secure his £63 million move to Arsenal, ending a bitter standoff with Sporting CP. The Swedish striker, who refused to report for pre-season training earlier this month, has now settled the dispute—clearing the way for his medical in London this weekend.

The 27-year-old went on strike on July 12 to force through the transfer after Arsenal’s initial negotiations stalled over add-ons. Sporting president Frederico Varandas was reportedly furious when Gyökeres instead vacationed in Mallorca while his teammates trained. The Portuguese club demanded he forfeit his full July salary but allowed him to keep €500,000 (£437,000) in performance bonuses from last season’s 43-goal campaign.

After weeks of tense back-and-forth, the Gunners finally agreed to a structured €63.5m (£54.8m) base fee plus €10m (£8.6m) in potential add-ons. Gyökeres is set to sign a five-year deal and inherit Arsenal’s No. 14 shirt, reuniting with Mikel Arteta’s squad in Singapore for pre-season once formalities are completed.

When pressed about the transfer on Friday, Arteta remained coy, stating: “You know I can’t talk about a player who isn’t ours yet. Whatever happens in the next few hours, I’m sure the club will announce it.”

The resolution marks a dramatic exit for Gyökeres after two prolific seasons in Lisbon—where his 97 goal contributions in 102 games made him one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards. Now, Arsenal fans await official confirmation of their new attacking talisman.
