Viktor Gyokeres Eyes His Own Legacy at Arsenal, Plays Down Thierry Henry Comparisons

New Signing Embraces Iconic No. 14 Shirt But Vows to “Do My Own Thing” as Gunners Prepare for Season Opener

Arsenal’s newest star, Viktor Gyokeres, has made it clear he wants to write his own chapter in the club’s storied history—not live in the shadow of a legend.

The Swedish striker, who completed a blockbuster €63.5 million (£72.56 million) move from Sporting Lisbon over the weekend, inherited Arsenal’s famous No. 14 jersey, once worn by the iconic Thierry Henry. But the 27-year-old is eager to forge his own path.

“Of course I know about the history,” Gyokeres told British media on Wednesday. “To be honest, there weren’t so many numbers available. But when I saw the 14 was free, it was an easy choice.”

Despite the inevitable comparisons, the prolific forward—who netted an astonishing 54 goals last season—insists he isn’t trying to emulate the French maestro.

“It’s not my intention to be compared with what he achieved,” Gyokeres said. “Henry was an amazing player, but we’re different. I just want to do my own thing and show my qualities.”

Arsenal fans won’t have to wait long to see their new signing in action. The Gunners kick off their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on August 17th, with Gyokeres hoping to make an instant impact.

Whether he can match Henry’s legacy remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Gyokeres is determined to make the No. 14 shirt his own.
