‘We are happy with the squad’ – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appears stuck at Chelsea as FIFA rules state he can’t join another club in January except for Barcelona, with Xavi shutting down possible Nou Camp return

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks resigned to staying at Chelsea after Barcelona boss Xavi revealed he is ‘happy’ with his squad.

The 33-year-old has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge just months after joining from the Catalan club last summer for £10million.

He was recently left out of the Blues’ squad for their FA Cup defeat away at Manchester City, leading to speculation he could be on his way out.

Atletico Madrid have been mooted as a possible destination, but that transfer cannot happen as FIFA rules state a player cannot represent more than two clubs in a single season.

Aubameyang featured in one LaLiga game for Barca prior to his switch to west London, meaning he can only re-sign for the Blaugrana if he departs Stamford Bridge.

According to AS, the ex-Arsenal skipper is desperate for a second spell at the Nou Camp, where he has contacted Xavi over a possible transfer.

They claim that the Gabon international is ‘unhappy’ at Chelsea, and ‘misses’ Catalonia with the 2020 FA Cup winner willing to do anything to secure a move back to Spain.

But in a hammer blow for Aubameyang, Xavi has publicly insisted he is happy with his team and isn’t thinking of bringing anyone in this month.

“In principle, there will be no changes. There has been no meeting.”

AS have declared that the only way Barca will sign Aubameyang for a second time is on a free transfer.

The centre-forward would also have to agree a lower salary – just as he hid last year when he joined after being released by Arsenal.

Barcelona will also only complete a transfer if Memphis Depay departs in January – with Atletico a possible destination in a striker merry-go-round as they seek to replace Joao Felix following his loan move to Chelsea.

Aubameyang impressed during the second half of last season for Barcelona where he banged in 13 goals in 23 games.

But as a result of Barca’s financial difficulties, they reluctantly parted ways with the former Borussia Dortmund marksman.
