Wenger Says Arsenal Relied Too Much on Corners, Defenders Looked Nervous

Club legend critiques his former team’s lack of composure and “technical cohesion” in damaging home loss to Manchester United.

In a candid assessment of Arsenal’s damaging 3-2 defeat, legendary former manager Arsène Wenger has claimed his old side placed too much reliance on set-pieces and revealed their usually solid center-backs appeared “nervous” against Manchester United.

The critique came after a thrilling match at the Emirates Stadium, where a late long-range strike from Matheus Cunha sealed a comeback victory for United’s interim manager Michael Carrick. The loss cuts Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to just four points.

“When you concede three goals at home it’s difficult to win,” Wenger stated on BeIN Sports. He contrasted the teams’ styles, noting, “The games of Man United are well built up, good cohesion, and the games of Arsenal were more decided by power and fighting on the corner.”

While Arsenal’s second goal came from a corner, Wenger suggested the approach highlighted a lack of fluid play. “They gave everything Arsenal but lacked a bit… the patience and technical cohesion,” he explained.

His most pointed observation concerned the defense. “It’s the first time I felt the [Arsenal] centre-backs were a bit more nervous and less dominant than usually in the games,” Wenger admitted.

The defeat marks a stumble for Mikel Arteta’s team, who have secured only two points from their last three matches. Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira echoed the concern about mentality, telling Sky Sports, “There are still questions about the mental strength of the team.”

As the title race intensifies, Wenger’s analysis underscores the mounting pressure and scrutiny on Arsenal’s once-steady formula.
