Wirtz Wanted Real Madrid Move Over Liverpool, Leverkusen CEO Reveals

In a candid revelation that casts a new light on Florian Wirtz’s difficult start at Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has disclosed the German international would have preferred a transfer to Real Madrid this past summer.

The attacking midfielder completed a blockbuster €125 million move to Anfield, but Carro confirms a different destination was top of the player’s wish list. “He would definitely have gone to Madrid if Xabi had made the offer,” Carro stated, referencing Real Madrid manager and former Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.

This revelation comes as Wirtz struggles to replicate the form that made him a superstar in Germany. The 21-year-old has yet to register a goal or assist in 10 Premier League appearances for Liverpool – a stark contrast to his final season at Leverkusen where he recorded 16 goals and 15 assists.

Carro suggested Wirtz’s ultimate ambition to win the Champions League motivated his departure, while acknowledging the player saw limitations in achieving that dream with Leverkusen. The German playmaker was a key figure in Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga title win and was named Bundesliga Player of the Season before his record-breaking transfer.

As Wirtz continues to adapt to English football, the disclosure that his heart was set on Madrid adds another layer of complexity to his challenging introduction to the Premier League.
