After a dismal defeat, United show fighting spirit to overturn a halftime deficit and ease the pressure on boss Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United banished the ghosts of their dismal Everton loss with a character-filled 2-1 comeback victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, fueled by second-half strikes from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount.
The win provides a vital tonic for manager Ruben Amorim, whose team had seen a promising five-match unbeaten run shattered by a lifeless performance last Monday. The pressure was mounting when Palace took the lead in a chaotic first half, but United fought back after the break to secure three crucial points.
The match turned on a bizarre sequence just after the half-hour mark. Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta saw his initial penalty saved, only for a VAR review to rule he had illegally struck the ball twice. Given a reprieve, the French forward coolly converted the retake in the 36th minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and leaving United with a mountain to climb.
Amorim’s halftime team talk clearly had the desired effect. United emerged with renewed purpose and found their equalizer in the 54th minute. Bruno Fernandes’s clever free kick found Zirkzee, who turned his marker and fired a low, powerful shot past former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, marking his first league goal since December.
The turnaround was completed just nine minutes later. Again, Fernandes was the architect, taking a quick free kick to set up Mason Mount, who expertly curled his shot around the defensive wall and into the net, leaving Henderson stranded.
Palace boss Oliver Glasner was visibly furious on the touchline, but his team couldn’t find a second equalizer despite late pressure. United held firm, with the final whistle sparking massive celebrations from the traveling fans and a palpable sigh of relief from Amorim.
The victory lifts United into the top half of the table, now just four points behind rivals Manchester City, and injects fresh belief into their campaign after a week of intense scrutiny.
