Gunners put on a “scary show of strength” to overpower Nottingham Forest and go top of the Premier League table.
Arsenal made a powerful statement with a commanding 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, a result that spoiled Ange Postecoglou’s debut as Forest manager and sent the Gunners to the top of the Premier League.
The match was lit up by an unexpected star, midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who scored a stunning brace to lead his team to a comfortable win. The home side broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark when Zubimendi unleashed a spectacular volley from the edge of the box that flew past a helpless Matz Sels.
Any hope of a Forest fightback was extinguished within seconds of the second-half restart. Home debutant Eberechi Eze, who impressed throughout, slid a perfect pass for Viktor Gyokeres to slot home his third goal for the club. Chris Wood later rattled the crossbar with a clever effort, but Arsenal never looked troubled and sealed the points late on when Zubimendi nodded in a simple third from a corner.
The performance drew high praise from pundits. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown called it a “really scary show of strength,” highlighting the impact of new signings. “At the moment Arsenal are looking so strong,” he added.
Ex-England striker Peter Crouch echoed the sentiment, noting, “They could afford the luxury of resting Rice… Zubimendi and Merino especially, were so comfortable in there – such great technical footballers.”
The result propels Arsenal to the top of the table on goal difference, having won three of their opening four games. For Nottingham Forest, who sit 11th, it’s a second consecutive defeat as they look to rebuild under new management.
Attention now turns to a busy week for both clubs. Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign at Athletic Club on Tuesday before a titanic Premier League clash with Manchester City next Sunday. Forest, meanwhile, visit Swansea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before a league trip to Burnley.
