Real Sociedad President Admits Midfielder Will Decide His Future in June
Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has revealed that midfielder Martín Zubimendi will make a decision on his future in June, with Arsenal emerging as strong contenders for his signature.
The 25-year-old Spanish international was heavily linked with Liverpool last summer but chose to stay with his boyhood club despite the Reds’ interest. Now, with Arsenal pushing to strengthen their midfield ahead of Jorginho’s expected departure, Zubimendi has become one of Mikel Arteta’s top targets.
Real Madrid are also reportedly monitoring the situation, setting up a potential transfer battle between two of Spain’s biggest clubs and the Premier League runners-up.
A Summer of Big Decisions
Speaking to Radio Marca Donostia, Aperribay remained coy about Zubimendi’s next move but confirmed the player will assess his options at the end of the season.
“We’ll see what happens,” Aperribay said. “All I ask from him is one last push to help us qualify for Europe. After that, whatever happens will be decided in June.”
He added: “There’s no point speculating now. He’s had chances to leave before, and he’ll make the choice he feels is right—because he’ll have options.”
Will He Stay or Go?
Zubimendi has a €60 million (£51m) release clause in his contract, which runs until 2027, and Arsenal are believed to be ready to meet it. However, Aperribay insisted no talks have taken place about a potential contract extension yet.
“I don’t remember our last conversation about his future,” he admitted. “When we speak, it’s more about the team’s objectives. There’s one month left in the season, and we’re fighting for Europe—that’s the focus.”
When pressed on whether Zubimendi could stay, Aperribay said: “I don’t know if it’s difficult. We haven’t tried to change his release clause. Contracts aren’t negotiated that way—it’s about what the player wants. If he decides to stay, the discussion would take five minutes.”
Arsenal’s Spanish Revolution
Arteta is keen to add more Spanish talent to his squad, with Athletic Club winger Nico Williams and Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García also on Arsenal’s radar. Zubimendi, a composed and technically gifted defensive midfielder, fits the profile of player Arteta admires—someone who can dictate play from deep and provide stability in front of the backline.
With Liverpool no longer in the running—thanks to Ryan Gravenberch’s impressive development—Arsenal appear to be the frontrunners. But Real Madrid’s interest could complicate matters, especially if Zubimendi prefers a move within La Liga.
For now, all eyes are on June, when the midfielder will finally make his choice. One thing is certain: his decision could shape the transfer plans of multiple top clubs this summer.
