Arsenal Gain Edge in Pursuit of Euro 2024 Star Nico Williams

Teammate Urges Winger to Reject Barcelona Move

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Euro 2024 standout Nico Williams have received a boost as one of his Athletic Club teammates has advised him against joining Barcelona.

Williams, who has emerged as one of Athletic’s top players, tallied eight goals and 19 assists in 37 games last season. His contributions included an assist in the Copa del Rey final, helping Athletic clinch their first trophy in 40 years. The 22-year-old’s performances at Euro 2024 further elevated his status, with two goals and one assist propelling Spain to their first tournament victory since 2012.

Despite signing a new contract with Athletic that runs until June 2027, Williams’ £50m release clause has attracted significant attention. Arsenal has shown the most interest among Premier League clubs, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain also reportedly keen on the winger.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed the club’s interest in Williams, stating: “Our financial situation has improved a lot. We’re close to normality. Today, Barca can sign big names as we did our job. We will clarify our financial situation soon.”

This indicates that Barcelona may be capable of meeting Williams’ release clause, a challenge they have faced in past transfer windows. However, Arsenal received encouragement from Williams’ Athletic teammate and captain, Oscar de Marcos, who advised the rising star to decline Barcelona’s offer.

“There is a belief that when Barca wants you, there is a logic that you have to go to Barcelona,” De Marcos said. “And if you don’t go, you are making a mistake. You must keep in mind that not everything that glitters is gold.”

De Marcos hinted that Barcelona’s financial struggles and recent shortcomings compared to Real Madrid might limit Williams’ chances of winning trophies if he joins the Catalan club.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will welcome the support from Williams’ teammates, as he is eager to bring the talented winger to the Emirates. However, Arsenal faces competition not only from Barcelona but also from PSG.

Reports suggest PSG is interested in both Williams and Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho as they look to revamp their attack following Kylian Mbappe’s transfer to Madrid. Athletic will strive to retain Williams, who has a strong connection to the club, but his potential has caught the attention of some of Europe’s most prestigious teams, making his future a hot topic in the transfer market.
