Arsenal to Compete with Barcelona for Athletic Club Winger Nico Williams

Gunners Hope to Secure Star Despite Strong Interest from Camp Nou

Arsenal is set to battle Barcelona for the signature of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, according to recent reports. Despite Arsenal’s interest, Williams is said to prefer staying in Spain, with Barcelona emerging as a strong contender. A deal with Barcelona is expected if the Catalan club can meet the €60 million release clause required to secure Williams from Athletic.

Barcelona’s pursuit of Williams has reportedly angered Athletic Club, but the Basque outfit will be unable to prevent the transfer if the Blaugrana can match the release clause figure.

However, Arsenal remains hopeful of landing the talented winger. As reported by the Daily Express, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that the club will be active in the transfer market this summer, looking to strengthen key positions. “We know there are certain positions that we want to improve and give the squad better resources, especially in terms of numbers where we are very short,” Arteta told the media in Los Angeles after Arsenal arrived for their US tour.

“We will try our best but the main thing is to focus on falling in love with the players we have and make them better,” Arteta added. Nico Williams presents a particularly enticing prospect, with his €58 million release clause considered a bargain given his recent performances.

Williams has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €45.6 million, which is expected to rise following his impressive display at Euro 2024. Last season, he scored eight goals and provided 16 assists across La Liga and the Copa del Rey, where Athletic Club famously clinched the title.

The competition for Williams is expected to intensify as both Arsenal and Barcelona vie for his services, making him one of the most sought-after players in the current transfer window.
