Former Liverpool Coach Joins Gunners in Consultancy Role to Add New Edge to Set-Piece Arsenal
Arsenal have turned to a specialist to sharpen their attack from an often-overlooked set piece, appointing former Liverpool throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark as they pursue every possible edge in a tight Premier League title race.
The Danish expert, who worked under Jürgen Klopp during Liverpool’s most successful period in recent years, will join Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff in a consultancy role. His arrival follows a highly effective three-season spell at Brentford, whose nine goals from throw-ins since the start of last season are more than double any other Premier League side.
“We are always looking for ways to improve in every area,” Arteta said in a club statement. “Thomas brings unique expertise that can add another dimension to our game.”
While Arsenal already boast the league’s best record from corners and free-kicks under set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, they are one of only eight teams yet to score from a throw-in this season. Gronnemark’s task will be to transform that statistic into tangible goals.
The 50-year-old former world record holder for the longest throw-in helped Liverpool rise from 18th to first in throw-in retention during his first season at Anfield, contributing to their Champions League and Premier League triumphs. He has since consulted for clubs across Europe, including Borussia Dortmund and Ajax.
Currently six points clear at the top of the table, Arsenal are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for a first league title since 2004. With Gronnemark now on board, opponents will need to prepare for a new threat from the touchline.
