Breakthrough in Negotiations Moves Transfer Closer
Arsenal is on the verge of securing a €50 million (£42.1m) deal to sign Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, according to reports from Italy.
Mikel Arteta’s side has made Calafiori a priority this transfer window. However, negotiations had stalled due to a dispute between Bologna and the 22-year-old’s former club, FC Basel. Basel, who sold Calafiori last August for €4m (£3.4m), are demanding 50 percent of the transfer fee Arsenal is set to pay. Bologna has been resistant to these terms, given Calafiori’s brief stint with the Swiss side and his first senior call-up to Italy only occurring in May this year.
According to Sky Sports Italy and Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal is now ‘one step away’ from signing Calafiori after making a breakthrough in talks with Bologna. Both clubs have reportedly agreed on a €50m (£42.1m) package, with the final add-ons and bonuses currently being discussed. Positive discussions involving Calafiori’s agent, Alessandro Lucci, were crucial in advancing the deal this week.
