Gunners Secure Riccardo Calafiori and Reach Agreement with Mikel Merino
Arsenal has made significant moves in the transfer market, first announcing the signing of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and now reportedly agreeing on personal terms with Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino.
On Monday afternoon, the Gunners confirmed the acquisition of Calafiori. An official statement from the club read:
“Italy international Riccardo Calafiori has joined us from Serie A side Bologna on a long-term contract. The 22-year-old defender was a member of the Azzurri squad at Euro 2024, after a season full of impressive performances at the heart of Bologna’s defence.”
Adding to the excitement, reports from Sports Zone indicate that Arsenal has agreed on a four-year contract with Merino, keeping the Spanish midfielder at the club until 2028. Merino, 28, played a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, scoring the decisive goal against Germany in the quarter-final.
Merino has previous Premier League experience, having played for Newcastle United in 2017 before returning to Spain for a reported fee of £10 million.
Following the signing of Calafiori, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his enthusiasm:
“We welcome Riccardo and his family to Arsenal. He is a great signing and gives us huge strength to reinforce our defence. Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies. He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy, with his progression and development in the past year being really impressive.”
Arsenal is gearing up for their pre-season action, set to take on Liverpool at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday night. Following this, Arteta’s squad will face Bayer Leverkusen and Lyon before kicking off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
