Spanish Midfielder Promises ‘Best Is Yet to Come’ After Completing £55m Switch From Real Sociedad
Martin Zubimendi has revealed that Arsenal was his “clear first choice” the moment he decided to leave Real Sociedad, completing a £55 million move to North London that the midfielder describes as the perfect next step in his career.
The 26-year-old, who spent 15 years with the Basque club, put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Gunners on Sunday, turning down previous interest from Liverpool to seal his long-awaited Premier League switch. In his first interview as an Arsenal player, Zubimendi didn’t hide his excitement about joining Mikel Arteta’s ambitious project.
“Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a perfect fit for me,” Zubimendi said. “It’s a young, highly motivated, and ambitious team. They’ve shown their potential recently, and I truly believe the best is yet to come.”

The Spanish international, known for his composure and intelligence in midfield, becomes Arsenal’s second signing of the summer after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s £5 million arrival from Chelsea. He also reunites with former Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino, who made the same move last year, as well as Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard—a familiar face from their time together in La Liga.
“I’m happy to be here with them,” Zubimendi added. “As soon as you set foot here, you realize how big this club and this team are. Andrea [Berta, Arsenal’s technical director] and Mikel [Arteta] took excellent care of me—they left me with no doubts whatsoever.”
Having rejected Liverpool’s advances just 12 months ago, Zubimendi’s decision to finally make the leap underscores Arsenal’s growing pull under Arteta. The midfielder, who made over 200 appearances for Sociedad, admitted the move represents a major career milestone.
“This is a huge moment for me,” he said. “It’s the move I was looking for—one I really wanted to make. Of course, it’s a big change, but I’m ready to get started and give everything for this club.”
With Zubimendi’s arrival, Arsenal add another layer of control and creativity to their midfield, reinforcing their title ambitions ahead of the new season. And if the Spaniard’s words are anything to go by, the Emirates faithful have plenty to look forward to.
