Arsenal’s £50m target Zubimendi snubbed them before and could do it again

The Real Sociedad midfielder has a hefty release clause but has shown no interest in joining the Gunners

Arsenal are reportedly keen to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi in the January transfer window, but they could face another rejection from the Spanish midfielder. The Sun claims that the Gunners are ready to trigger Zubimendi’s £50m release clause, which would allow them to bypass any negotiations with his club. However, the 24-year-old has already turned down Arsenal once before, and he may not be tempted to change his mind this time.

According to Cadena SER, Arsenal made a move for Zubimendi last January, when they were looking for a new central midfielder to bolster their squad. They were willing to pay his release clause then, but Zubimendi decided to stay put at Real Sociedad, where he had just signed a contract extension. He was not interested in leaving his hometown club, where he has been playing since he was eight years old.

Zubimendi has not shown any signs of regretting his decision, as he has become a key player for Real Sociedad, who are currently fourth in La Liga. He has also earned his first cap for Spain, and he is regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the country. He has recently reaffirmed his commitment to his club, saying: “I have never planned to leave Real Sociedad. I always say that. I love life here.”

Arsenal may be hoping that Zubimendi will reconsider his stance, as they are in need of a quality midfielder to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race. They have been plagued by injuries in that area, with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny missing several games this season. Zubimendi could be the ideal addition to their midfield, as he is a versatile and dynamic player who can defend, create, and score.

However, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could be left embarrassed for the second time if he tries to lure Zubimendi to the Emirates Stadium. The midfielder has already snubbed him once, and he could do it again. Arsenal may have to look elsewhere for their midfield solution, or risk facing another humiliation.
