At 58, ‘King Kazu’ Signs for New Club, Vowing His Passion for Football Hasn’t Changed

Japanese legend Kazuyoshi Miura joins third-division Fukushima United for his 41st professional season, declaring, “Let’s make history together!”

Japanese football icon Kazuyoshi Miura has signed for third-division club Fukushima United at the age of 58, declaring his love for the game burns as brightly as ever as he embarks on an astonishing 41st professional season.

The player known as “King Kazu,” who will turn 59 next month, joins on loan until June. The move marks a return to Japan’s professional J. League for the first time in five years.

“My passion for football hasn’t changed, no matter how old I get,” the former national team star said in a statement released by his new club. “I’m very grateful to be given the opportunity to play in Fukushima, and I will fight hard as a member of Fukushima United. Let’s make history together!”

Miura spent last season with fourth-tier Atletico Suzuka but is now ready for what he calls a “new challenge” with Fukushima, who finished mid-table in the 20-team J3 League last season.

“To all the Fukushima United players, coaching staff, fans, sponsors and people in the local area, I promise that I will play with everything I have to make a contribution,” he said.

Miura’s professional career began in 1986 with Brazilian giants Santos. His storied journey has since taken him to clubs in Italy, Croatia, Australia, and Portugal. He became a household name in Japan, helping to launch the professional J. League in 1993 and cementing the sport’s popularity.

Despite a prolific international career where he scored 55 goals in 89 games for Japan, he was controversially omitted from the squad for the country’s first-ever World Cup finals appearance in 1998—a moment that remains a poignant footnote in his legendary career.

Now, nearly four decades after his debut, King Kazu is set to write another chapter, driven by an undimmed passion that continues to inspire the football world.
